July 12, 2018

Business leaders and various government officials gathered on July 12 to break ground on the two-mile extension of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard south to Fruitville Road.

The project is expected to start before the end of the month. The road will be built by Woodruff and Sons, and is anticipated to take approximately 18 months to finish.

The extension will be a four-lane roadway from its current terminus at Communications Parkway, south to Fruitville Road, with an estimated cost of $16 million. The Lakewood Ranch Boulevard extension, along with the Lorraine Road extension completed in 2017, total nine miles worth of roads funded largely by the Lakewood Ranch Stewardship District.

The extension represents a collaboration between Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (the developer of Lakewood Ranch) and Sarasota County, working toward a common goal that will greatly benefit the community, according to Laura Cole, vice president of marketing for Lakewood Ranch.

“The improvement to the transportation network will contribute greatly to the quality of life for people in both Manatee and Sarasota counties,” Cole said, “allowing for ease of north-south travel and an alleviation of congestion on I-75. The road will also help to connect Sarasota with the job center that Lakewood Ranch has become.”

Once complete, Lakewood Ranch Boulevard will facilitate travel from Fruitville to U.S. 301, north of the Manatee River, via the Fort Hamer Bridge.

Schroeder-Manatee Ranch has a history, since its inception, of planning and implementing infrastructure ahead of development. This infrastructure, as well as other amenities, have boosted sales and made Lakewood Ranch the No. 2 best-selling master-planned community in the U.S. thus far for 2018. Shopping districts, sporting venues, the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, and A-rated public schools have all contributed to the Ranch’s sought-after lifestyle.
